Facemasks are one of the trendiest ways to care for your skin. From crème, gel, and sheet masques to exfoliating masques, there is an option for every skin type and concern. So why invest in a skincare masque you may ask? Masques are highly concentrated in active ingredients and can therefore only be used 1-3 times per week. They offer your skin a boost of radiance and glow above and beyond your normal skincare routine.
Face masques help to absorb excess oil, exfoliate clogged pores, hydrate, nourish and reduce inflammation. So, you are sold on the concept of a masque but how do you choose the correct masque for your skin type and concern?
If you have dry skin, you will look for hydrating crème or sheet masques that contain ceramides, antioxidants, growth factors, hyaluronic acid, and the like. These masques feel luxurious in texture, and some can be left on overnight. They can also bed used to treat the eye and lip area.
Clay and mud-based masques are ideal for combination to oily skin. It will help to absorb excess oil, detoxify, and clean the skin as well as refine skin texture. It also helps to reduce swelling and inflammation associated with acne. These masques usually contain ingredients such as kaolin and bentonite clay, salicylic acid, Sulphur, glycerin, and beta-glucan.
Gel and enzyme masques are ideal for any skin type looking for a pick-me-up. Enzymes are a safe and effective way of removing dead skin cells, revealing glowing and healthy skin. Gel masques are ideal for use on dehydrated and sensitized skins (post-sunburn of exercising) that need extra love and care.
Once you have found your ideal face masque, it is time to prepare your skin for the application. You want to make sure that your skin is thoroughly cleansed, we recommend doing a double cleanse, and exfoliate to ensure optimal penetration of the active ingredients. Exfoliation is not necessary should you be using a masque that contains acids, enzymes, or granules. You are now ready to apply your masque using a thin layer, or as recommended, to the face, neck and decollate. Most masks, except those labeled as overnight, should be worn for no more than 20minutes at a time. Using lukewarm water and your fingers, gently remove the masque, making sure to avoid vigorous rubbing. Gently pat your face dry after rinsing it off and finish with a hydrating mist and crème.
Face masks can feel luxurious and pampering and can be a fun way to treat your skin at home and get great results. Make your skin a priority and take the time to mask.
