The age of the feminist is here and brings with it many important and lasting changes in equal rights for women across the world. Look at any modern movie or series and you will often see the main character sporting lipstick and a kick-ass wardrobe. With the media portrayal of strong, fierce, and highly capable woman, comes the real-world pressure of having to perform at every level.
Over a cup of coffee with your girlfriends you might hear the words ‘responsibilities’, ‘exhaustion’, ‘overwhelming’ and even ‘burnt out’. The expectation is laid before every woman to perform both within her chosen career and family life, and although we are ever thankful for those that came before us that paved the path of equality, we need to ensure that our strategies for coping are adjusted to the current economic and lifestyle climate we find ourselves.
Self-care is often a foreign concept to many women, as our instinct is to provide and care for others around us. And even though this is a beautiful characteristic, unique to women, there are certain boundaries we can set in place, to ensure that we can be there for our loved ones, while loving to live our own lives.
While popular advice includes, ‘make sure to drink enough water’, ‘take a day off’, ‘make time for yourself every day’ and ‘learn to say no’, the main change in behavior comes from boundaries. A boundary is a line which marks the limits of an area, a dividing line. And a dividing line is best implemented by action.
So herein lies the secret, to take a practical and often physical, step towards alone time. Every woman’s alone time will look different, and will depend on what you, the true you, enjoys doing the most. It may include taking a walk outside in nature, painting a picture of a fabulous nature scene, receiving a luxurious pedicure and massage, or treating your skin to reveal the glow that you once had as a younger woman.
So, draw the line today, and take the time for yourself and your wellbeing.
